Konvekta, a German manufacturer of CO2 (R744) heat pump systems for commercial vehicles, has developed a new software module – “Additional Energy Storage (AES) Mode” – that eliminates the need for an electric heater in electric buses, reducing both costs and energy consumption.
Austrian manufacturer AHT, part of Daikin, highlighted its propane (R290)-based cabinets and Active Monitoring System (AMS) as part of World Refrigeration Day, celebrated yesterday (June 26) under the theme “Cooling Matters.”
Hillphoenix announced the launch of R290 self-contained display cases, part of the company’s Second Nature® Natural product line. R290 cases are the newest addition to Hillphoenix’s expansive natural refrigerant portfolio and provide customers with a plug-and-play, flexible and compliant solution for their retail operations.
Twenty-seven people have been arrested and 110 tonnes of refrigerant seized in an operation which has seen the dismantling of a major criminal organisation in Spain.
Trane®, global provider of indoor comfort solutions and services and a brand of Trane Technologies, announced today it is expanding its Sintesis™ Balance CMAF portfolio of multi-pipe units for simultaneous cooling and heating. The new models are now available with R-454B refrigerant in capacities ranging from 150 to 1,400 kilowatts (kW). The units deliver better cooling and heating efficiencies, improved operating maps and lower environmental impact compared to equivalent models with R-410A.
UNDP provides refrigeration and air conditioning technicians with modern equipment
Record numbers of celebrations and information events around the world to mark theme of ‘Cooling Matters’ on 26 June

Manufacturer trial of new technologies designed to run on CO2 refrigerant have concluded that efficiency improvements are possible across various types of climate.
Cimco Refrigeration, a Toronto-based industrial refrigeration contractor, has reduced energy consumption at a Quebec-based meat-processing plant operated by Viandes Paquette by 2.5 million kWh annually with a low-charge ammonia/NH3 (R717) system. By reclaiming excess heat from the ammonia system, Cimco removed the need for any boilers at the plant.
On the 15th of June, 2022 the Tonga – [Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communications (MEIDECC)], Department of Climate Change hosted a meeting with the advisory committee for ozone layer protection. The objectives of the meeting is to oversee Tonga’s obligations to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer as well as ensuring that all implemented and planned activities of the National Ozone Unit (NOU) is aligned with the provisions of the Ozone Layer Protection Act 2021.
U.S.-based supermarket chain Hannaford has equipped the entire frozen section of its new store in Brunswick, Maine, with propane (R290) self-contained cases, according to a recent presentation by Harrison Horning, Director of Maintenance, Retail Business Services – Hannaford and Stop & Shop, part of Ahold Delhaize.

We are all aware of the F-Gas legislation and the drive to low GWP refrigerants but this is only a small part of the overall solution to reduce climate changing emissions. Choosing a low GWP refrigerant does not guarantee a better energy efficiency and in some cases, it may even lead to an increase in the lifetime total emissions from the system if a lower efficiency option is selected. As well as refrigerant choice, there are other actions that can be taken to maintain or improve energy efficiency, reduce total emissions and in most cases they will even pay for themselves over the lifetime of the equipment.
Supermarket giant releases findings from store trial looking at energy efficiency impacts of switching from older CO2 solution to a lower flammability A2L system.
The F-gas regulation is continuously progressing with two new bans having come into effect from 1st January 2022 but most of the implications of the legislation are still hidden by the apparent abundant supply of higher GWP refrigerants.
The Centre for Energy Technology (ZET) at the University of Bayreuth has handed over a CO2-powered air conditioning system to the Kulmbach Vocational School Centre (BSZ) for use in its operations and teaching.
At the meeting in December of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), glaciologists released some alarming observations: the Antarctic Thwaites glacier is torn by cracks and risks of crumbling completely at time intervals estimated from 5 to 10 years. The news is alarming because this glacier – more or less, as big as Florida – contains enough water to raise sea levels around the world by about half a meter. Already today, the melting of the glacier contributes to 4% of the current annual rise in sea level. Not fortuitously, this glacier is also called “Doomsday glacier”.
