Schools must inspire young engineers

A new report calls for a wholesale change in the way engineering is promoted in UK schools. The report from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers “Five Tribes: Personalizing Engineering Education” is calling on government, teachers, industry and science technology engineering and maths (STEM) organizations to take into account young people’s diverse values and attitudes to try and inspire them about engineering.

US industry announces $5 billion refrigerant research plan

The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) president and CEO Stephen Yurek announces that American HVACR industry will invest $5 bn in research and development funds over the next decade for new-generation refrigerants and equipment. The announcement took place at an event, sponsored by the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

Growth in the world heat pump market

The world heat pump market increased 7.2% by volume in 2013 to almost 2 million units. The growth was driven by the strong progression of sales of heat pump water heater in the USA especially on the one hand, and the recovery of the European market on the other hand.

Cooler bedrooms could subtly transform a person’s stores of brown fat — what has lately come to be thought of as “good fat” — and consequently alter energy expenditure and metabolic health, even into daylight hours.
