Boutique hotel finds room for CO2

A Cornish beachside boutique hotel is one of the first non-retail businesses to adopt smaller-scale CO2 refrigeration for its food cold storage.

The Beach hotel, which overlooks Summerleaze Beach in Bude, chose a CO2 system after discussing its requirements with Barnstaple-based contractor KJ Refrigeration. The 16-room hotel is part of the Smith Collection – one of only three in North Cornwall.

Despite the more expensive initial capital cost, CO2 has become the preferred choice of refrigerant for the retail sector in the UK. Now smaller systems, like the Cubo2 Smart, are becoming available for non-retailer businesses.

Dean & Wood Ltd selected and supplied a full coldroom package including the Cubo2 Smart condensing unit, Lu-Ve CO2 evaporator, Carel controls and the K65 pipe and fittings.

Installation was carried out by KJ Refrigeration’s engineers after attending a Cubo2 Smart training course at Cool Concerns.

“The Cubo2 Smart system, although more involved than a traditional one was straight forward and we will use it again due to its low carbon footprint,” commented KJ Refrigeration MD Kevin Jones.
